About the South African Mirror Project
Last updated: October 2025
Overview
The South African Mirror Project was created to provide faster, local access to popular Linux distributions and open-source software repositories. By maintaining mirrors within South Africa, we aim to reduce latency, bandwidth costs, and dependency on international connections for software updates and package downloads.
Goals
- Improve download speeds for South African users and institutions.
- Support open-source communities by hosting reliable local mirrors.
- Ensure redundancy and availability across multiple regional sources.
- Contribute to broader network resilience and self-hosted infrastructure initiatives.
Infrastructure
Our mirrors are hosted on dedicated infrastructure connected via high-speed fibre, with redundant storage and monitoring in place. Synchronisation occurs several times per day using rsync, ensuring data freshness while minimising network overhead.
Each repository follows official mirroring policies from its upstream source, and sync intervals are tuned based on update frequency and size.
Acknowledgements
This project is community-driven and inspired by global efforts to make open-source software more accessible. We appreciate the support of upstream maintainers, network operators, and the local Linux community.
